Lekking and Lek Identification
In the spring breeding season, most of the males in the area congregate on small patches of ground known as leks. In suitable habitat, leks may be one-half to two and one-half miles apart and are located on small knoll or flat area providing a broad horizontal horizontal view of the surrounding area.
Leks and Industrial Development
In Saskatchewan, Sharp-tailed grouse leks are listed under the Saskatchewan Activity Restriction Guidelines for Sensitive Species as a key wildlife feature. This designation means that lekking grounds have a setback distance in which disturbances are limited between March 15 - May 15. The activity Restriction Guidelines for Sensitive Species are designed to assist proponents during the planning of proposed projects.
