Make the decision that you would no hesitate to tell someone about in the future, if you were surrounded by a group of on lookers what would they say about your decision?
When managing one species we must incorporate its entire life cycle into the strategy, one habitat may be critical during specific times of the year but remain unused during others. Available habitat for each season or function must be available in enough supply as not to reduce populations to below viable thresholds.
When we tinker with natural ecosystems without fully understanding potential ramifications we are inevitably discarding valuable components that will be needed in the future. What we fail to see as critical to natural functions can only be revealed by maintaining the integrity of the system. As Aldo Leopold sated “if the biota, in the course of aeons, has built something we like but do not understand, then who but a fool would discard seemingly useless parts? To keep every cog and wheel is the first precaution of intelligent tinkering.”
